The short answer
Most wall oven problems, such as no heat, uneven baking, error codes, a stuck door lock or a dead control panel, come from a specific part that can be tested and replaced. On a Wolf, Viking or Thermador wall oven, repair is usually worth it when the cabinet, door and cavity are sound. A diagnostic visit tells you what failed before you decide.
A built-in wall oven is hard to work around when it fails. It sits in custom cabinetry, it often shares a wiring circuit with a second oven or a microwave drawer, and on a busy week it may be the only way dinner gets made. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair is an independent repair company in Van Nuys that works on premium kitchens. We lead with Sub-Zero, and many of the kitchens we visit pair Sub-Zero refrigeration with a Wolf, Viking or Thermador wall oven. We repair single, double, convection, steam and combination wall ovens from those brands for homeowners across Van Nuys and the surrounding San Fernando Valley. This page explains the problems we see, what a technician checks, and how to think about repairing a high-end oven versus replacing it.
Issues we fix
These are the symptoms homeowners most often describe when they call about a wall oven. Some point to a single failed part. Others need testing to separate a control problem from a heating problem.
- Oven won't heat, or heats very slowly to temperature
- Uneven heat, with baked goods burning on one side or pale on the bottom
- Temperature runs well above or below the setting
- Broil or bake element not glowing, or visibly blistered or broken
- Convection fan not spinning, or grinding and rattling
- Error codes or fault messages on the display
- Touch controls unresponsive, flickering, or the display going blank
- Door stuck locked after a self-clean cycle, or won't lock to start one
- Door not closing flush, worn hinges, or a torn gasket letting heat escape
- Cooling fan running constantly, or not running at all
- Steam oven not producing steam, or water reservoir and drain faults
- Oven light, probe or timer not working

What our technician checks on a built-in unit
We start by confirming the symptom with you and checking the model and serial number so we work from the correct service information. Then we check power at the oven. A tripped breaker or a lost leg of a 240-volt supply can make an oven heat partially or not at all, and that is worth ruling out before anything else.
From there we test the parts that control and produce heat: bake, broil and convection elements, the oven temperature sensor, relays on the control board, and the high-limit thermostat that shuts the oven down if it overheats. On convection models we check the fan motor and its element. We also inspect the door: hinges, gasket, latch and lock motor, since a door that does not seal or lock properly causes both heating complaints and self-clean failures.
Built-in ovens depend on a cooling fan to move heat away from the electronics. In inland valley neighborhoods where summer kitchens already run hot, a weak cooling fan can lead to control problems that look unrelated at first. If the oven has to come out of the cabinet for access, we explain why before we pull it and protect the surrounding cabinetry and flooring.
How Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador differ
Sub-Zero itself focuses on refrigeration. Its sister brand Wolf builds the wall ovens found in many Sub-Zero kitchens. Wolf ovens are known for sophisticated convection systems and electronic controls, so the calls we get often involve temperature sensors, convection fan motors, control and display boards, and door hinges on heavier doors.
Viking wall ovens tend to bring us more heating element and hinge work, along with control boards and door lock assemblies on self-cleaning models. Because Viking has offered several design generations, part availability can vary by age, and we check that early.
Thermador offers a wide range of wall ovens, including steam and combination steam-convection units. Beyond the usual sensor, element and control faults, steam models add water system parts such as pumps, reservoirs, and descaling-related issues. Double ovens from any of these brands can have one cavity working and the other not, which usually points to a part specific to that cavity.

Repair or replace a high-end wall oven?
A premium wall oven is built into a cutout sized for that model. Replacing it can mean finding a unit that fits the same opening, or modifying cabinetry and trim, which adds work beyond the oven itself. That alone makes repair the sensible first look in most cases.
Repair usually makes sense when the cavity, door glass and frame are in good condition and the fault is a part like an element, sensor, fan, lock or control board. Replacement is worth discussing when the oven body is damaged, when key parts have been discontinued, or when several major parts are failing at once. We will tell you plainly which situation you are in, and the decision stays yours.
What affects the cost of a wall oven repair
We give a clear estimate after diagnosis rather than a guess over the phone, because several things change the scope of the job.
- The fault itself: a door gasket is simpler than a control board or a steam system repair
- The part: electronic boards and specialty steam components generally cost more than elements or sensors
- Part availability on older or discontinued models
- Access: an oven set deep in custom cabinetry, or stacked in a double unit, may need to be pulled out
- Whether more than one part has failed
How a service visit works
When you contact us, have the brand, model number and a short description of the symptom ready. The model tag is usually on the oven frame, visible when the door is open. We schedule a visit in Van Nuys or a nearby city and ask that the oven be cool and the area in front of it clear.
The technician diagnoses the problem, explains what failed and why, and gives you an estimate before any repair begins. If the part is on hand, many repairs are finished the same visit. If it needs to be ordered, we schedule a return trip and handle the install. Before leaving, we run the oven to confirm it heats and operates correctly.
