The short answer
Most dishwasher problems in high-end kitchens come down to drainage, leaks, heating, or controls, and many are repairable without pulling the unit. We repair dishwashers in Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador kitchens around Van Nuys, check the specific fault first, and give you a clear repair-or-replace recommendation.
A dishwasher that leaves standing water, smells sour, or stops mid-cycle with a code on the display disrupts the whole kitchen. This is especially true when the unit is panel-ready and built flush into custom cabinetry. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair is an independent service company in Van Nuys that repairs dishwashers in premium kitchens across the San Fernando Valley and nearby cities. Many of the homes we visit have Sub-Zero refrigeration and Wolf cooking paired with a Cove dishwasher from the same manufacturer group. Others have Viking or Thermador dishwashers. We are not affiliated with any of these brands. We diagnose the actual fault, explain it in plain terms, and tell you whether a repair makes sense before any work begins.
Issues we fix
These are the symptoms homeowners most often call about. Several can share a single root cause, so tell us everything you've noticed, even if it seems minor.
- Water left in the bottom of the tub after a cycle, or a dishwasher that won't drain at all
- Leaks onto the floor, warped toe-kick or cabinet panels, or a flood-protection code from water in the base
- Dishes that come out cloudy, gritty, or still dirty
- Dishes that stay wet, or water that never seems to get hot
- Error codes, blinking lights, or a control panel that won't respond
- Cycles that stop partway through, run far too long, or won't start
- Detergent or rinse aid that doesn't dispense
- Grinding, humming, or loud knocking during the wash
- Doors that won't latch, drop open too fast, or won't stay up
- Musty or sour odors that return after cleaning the filter

What our technician checks on a built-in unit
On a panel-ready or professional-style dishwasher, the cabinetry is part of the job. The technician first looks at how the unit is mounted, how the custom panel is attached, and whether the door and toe-kick can be serviced in place. Many repairs can be done without sliding the dishwasher out. When it does have to come out, we take care to protect the flooring, the adjacent cabinets, and the panel finish.
From there, the checks follow the symptom. For drainage, we inspect the filter assembly, sump, drain pump, check valve, and the drain hose route to the disposer or air gap. For leaks, we look at the door gasket, tub seals, spray arm connections, inlet valve, and the base pan and its float switch. For heating and drying, we test the heating element or flow-through heater, the temperature sensor, and the related control circuits. For error codes and dead panels, we read the code history where the model allows it, check the door switch and wiring harness, and test the control and user-interface boards before condemning either one.
How Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf and Thermador kitchens differ
Sub-Zero and Wolf don't sell dishwashers under those names. Kitchens built around them often include a Cove dishwasher from the same company group, designed to sit flush with matching panels. On these units, we often trace complaints to drainage, door alignment after panel installation, and control or sensor faults. Because the panel adds weight, door springs and hinges deserve a close look when the door feels heavy or drops open.
Viking dishwashers, including older professional-style models still in many Valley homes, frequently come to us with door hinge and spring wear, latch problems, inlet valve leaks, and aging control boards. Parts availability for older Viking models varies, so we check sourcing early.
Thermador dishwashers share much of their engineering with other European-designed units. They are quiet and efficient, and they rely heavily on sensors. Common calls involve drain pump and filter clogs, flood-protection shutdowns triggered by water in the base, heating faults, and circulation pump issues. A shutdown code on a Thermador often points to a small leak elsewhere, so we find the source rather than just clearing the code.

Repair or replace a high-end dishwasher?
In most cases, a premium dishwasher is worth repairing. The tub, racks, and cabinetry fit are usually sound long after a pump, valve, gasket, or sensor wears out. Replacing the whole unit also means matching the panel and fitting the opening, which can involve cabinet work.
Replacement deserves a serious look when the tub itself is cracked or rusted through, when key parts have been discontinued, or when the unit needs several major components at once. In those cases we'll say so plainly and explain the trade-offs, so you can decide without pressure.
What affects the cost of a repair
We don't quote over the phone because the price depends on what's actually wrong. The biggest factors are the fault itself and the part involved. A clogged filter or a worn gasket is a very different job from a failed control board or a circulation motor. Parts for premium brands, and especially for older or discontinued models, vary in cost and lead time.
Access matters too. A unit that can be serviced from the front is quicker than one that has to be pulled from tight custom cabinetry with an integrated panel, a decorative toe-kick, or a countertop installation that limits clearance. After diagnosis, you get a clear explanation of the repair before we proceed.
How a visit works
When you contact us, share the brand, the model number if you can find it, and what you've noticed, including any codes. The model number is usually printed on a label along the edge of the door or the side of the tub. We schedule a visit in Van Nuys or a nearby city. The technician confirms the symptom, diagnoses the cause, and walks you through the findings and options.
If the part is on hand, many repairs are finished the same visit. If it has to be ordered, we tell you what's needed and return to complete the work. Before leaving, the technician runs the dishwasher to confirm it fills, washes, heats, and drains properly, and checks for leaks around the base and door.
