The short answer
Sub-Zero Appliance Repair is an independent company that repairs Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador refrigerators in Santa Monica homes, and Wolf cooking appliances too. We diagnose the problem on site, explain it in plain language and tell you whether a repair makes sense before any work starts.
When a built-in refrigerator stops holding temperature, the food inside sets the deadline. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair fixes refrigerators in Santa Monica homes. We focus on Sub-Zero built-ins and columns, and we also repair Viking and Thermador refrigeration. Many of the kitchens we visit pair the refrigerator with a Wolf range or wall oven, and we can look at those on the same trip. We're an independent repair company based in Van Nuys, about 14 miles away, and we come to homes across all five Santa Monica ZIP codes.
Refrigerator problems we see in Santa Monica kitchens
Most calls start with one of a handful of symptoms. Each has a short list of likely causes. A technician who knows these units can usually narrow the cause down with the right tests instead of guessing at parts.
- Fresh food section warm while the freezer stays cold, often from an evaporator fan, defrost or airflow problem
- Frost or ice building on the freezer's back panel
- Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor, usually from a clogged defrost drain or a leaking supply line
- Ice maker not producing, or a dispenser that stopped working
- Compressor running nonstop, clicking, or not starting at all
- Doors not sealing because of a torn gasket or a hinge out of adjustment
- Control panel errors, blinking lights or temperatures drifting from their set points
- New buzzing, rattling or grinding noises from a fan or motor

Why built-in refrigerators need a different approach
A Sub-Zero built-in or integrated column isn't a freestanding fridge you can pull out and turn around. The compressor and condenser usually sit at the top or bottom behind a grille. The unit is anchored into cabinetry and often wears custom panels. Reaching the sealed system or the electronics without scratching panels or flooring takes care and the right approach.
Viking and Thermador refrigerators have their own layouts, control boards and defrost designs. We diagnose each brand on its own terms rather than treating every unit the same. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you up front and explain what to expect in the meantime, including how to keep food safe.
Repair or replace is your call, and we try to make it an informed one. We'll tell you what failed, what else we noticed, and whether the rest of the unit looks sound. For built-ins that are fitted to the cabinetry, a repair is often the more practical path than tearing out a kitchen.
Coastal homes, warm spells and condenser care
Santa Monica sits near the coast, so summers usually stay milder here than in the valleys. That helps a refrigerator, but it doesn't remove the stress entirely. Fall Santa Ana winds can bring hot, dry spells. A refrigerator with a dusty condenser or a weak fan has to run much harder on those days, and that's often when a struggling unit finally quits.
Built-in units pull air through a front or top grille, and lint, pet hair and dust collect on the condenser coil. Cleaning the coil, checking the condenser fan and confirming good airflow ease the load on the compressor. In condos and apartments with tight kitchens, we also check that the unit has the ventilation clearance it was designed for.

What to do before we arrive
A few simple steps can protect your food and help the visit go faster.
- Move perishables to a cooler or a second fridge if the fresh food section is above 40°F
- Keep the doors closed as much as possible
- Write down any error codes, lights or sounds, and when the problem started
- Find the model and serial number tag, usually inside near the top or behind the grille
- If water is leaking and you can reach it, shut off the supply valve to the ice maker
- Clear a path to the kitchen and leave floor space in front of the refrigerator
